Prostitution in India
Submitted By  arnavchhabra,  Feb 7, 2010  |    Mon Feb 08 06:13:51 GMT 2010
Team Name : BeautyNotBody
University : University of Texas at Austin
Country : United States

In India, "about 200 girls and women enter prostitution daily of which 20% are below 15 years of age."

“It is estimated that more than 50% of the prostitutes in Mumbai [the corporate capital of India] are HIV-positive”

“In India, 70% of prostitutes in a survey reported being beaten by the police and more than 80% had been arrested without evidence.”

Shocked? Yes, we were too. However, most people don’t do anything about the problem and just consider it an inherent social fault of the society. We, on the other hand, disagree with the previous statement and intend to eliminate this “red-light” profession, one by one, saving one woman at a time. BeautyNotFlesh is an organization that aims to help take women off of streets who are subjected to prostitution. A major goal of our group is to rehabilitate these women and help them find jobs that will eventually help them attain financial independence and professional satisfaction.

Why they chose prostitution?

Each person’s story is unique. However, most of them have the same underlying problem.

  • Lack of financial resources to support oneself or family
  • Rejected by families
  • Mother is a prostitute
  • Duped by friends and guardians as pimps
  • Sold by lovers and husbands

Solution Proposals:

In lieu of all the causes above, we make proposals that not only intend to reduce the occurrence of prostitution, but also those that help the women who are already into this profession. Our plan is very unique. We base our solution on the fact that by helping a few women into rehabilitation, we can use the media to appeal to a large number of people in this profession, and also gather help and hope from the citizens.

Our plan is to first encourage increased efforts from organizations that already save women from brothels. We then plan to take these women and rehabilitate them to independence. Furthermore, after successfully helping some women to self-reliance, we will use the media to spread the story of our success, thus giving other women courage to leave their profession and a hope for a better future. We have diagrammed our initial step in this centralized flowchart.

After this initial step is under way and successful (hopefully!), our next step consists of taking help from the media to promote our cause.

Our hope is that the psychosocial rehabilitation we provide will be enough for these women to recover from the circle of violence, disease and abuse that they were subjected to before.

Prostitution is much too vast of a problem, no one can deny this.  But no program could ever begin to dent this problem.  It's usually the product of multiple ailments: poverty, lack of education, abuse, no other options, etc.  Rehabilitation will only help those who have been abused.  The only way a society can realistically limit prostitution is to improve its demographics.  Your idea has good intention, but a rehab program and media attention just isn't enough.

 TomLam22,

I agree when you say that it is a huge problem. It totally is. However, I think this team here is trying to initiate some sort of help for these women. Somebody somewhere has to START. This idea just might present some good results.

Very innovative and original idea, I must say!
