Hi, this sounds like a most excellent idea!

FYI- Myoo Create is running similar challenge- the Beat Waste Startup challenge, a contest for new start-ups that seek to reduce or eliminate waste. I'm thinking that this would make a great entry. First place is $15,000 and second place is $7,500. The last day to submit an entry is June 27th (PST). You can find full details here: http://www.myoocreate.com/challenges/the-plastiki-beat-waste-startup-challenge

Please feel free to get in touch if you have any questions and email me if you think you'll enter. Best of luck with everything!

Cheers,
Valerie Yep

This sounds wonderful! Love the waste reducing component.

FYI- Please consider entering the Beat Waste Startup Challenge from Myoo Create. There is a $15,000 first place prize and a $7,500 second place prize. All you need to enter the first round is a brief 200 word description and a short 3 min. (max) youtube video. You could probably just use the same video and trim 30 seconds off somewhere. The last day to enter is June 27th, full details can be found at: http://www.myoocreate.com/challenges/the-plastiki-beat-waste-startup-challenge

Looks like you would be a good match! Good luck with everything and hope to see an entry from you!

Cheers,
Valerie Yep

I visited Kibera last September with the Christian Foundation for Children and Aging and was moved beyond words.  I met so many wonderful human beings and even visited their homes.  We also visited a YMCA school and as former teacher, I was in awe of the joy and love I experienced.  Bless you a million times over the for the tremendous work you will be doing in Kibera.  I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.  I will be back in Kenya in September and October of this year and possibly I will have the honor of meeting you.  God bless....

Great idea but this is the same model that MicroEnsure (www.microensure.com), PlanetGuarantee and the Aga Kahn's FMIA all use. People have been doing this brokerage model as a mission driven micro insurance intermediary for almost ten years now. The Gates Foundation has made over $80m of investment in this model.

@ticklemepink6789 Of course, our CEO already has plans to intern for the Ministry of Agriculture in Rwanda this summer and I (COO) am in Europe at the moment organic farming in order to learn about sustainable agricultural practices.  We plan on implementing our model whether we win our not, but the seed funding would could surely help us get started ASAP.
Thanks for your question.

I believe the aim of PoverUp is to help those who live under 2$ a day, including those who are unable to receive a proper education, not to ask them to donate 5-10$. They want to get the donations from students in the developed world. The 2% predicted donation rate accounts for those who are unable or unwilling to donate i.e. they assume only 2 out of 100 students in the developing world will donate 5-10$. With these numbers and generous assumptions, they still predict they will be able to make a significant impact on those living under the poverty line.

The main points of the project are to help people out of poverty and to increase student awareness and involvement, which I think are excellent goals that are within reach.

They definitely got my vote.

Thanks @deepti.pradeep, you've written perfectly what I wanted to write in my answer to
@jaikang's question. So many votes is enough to suspect a fraud.
@jaikang, I hope you've got the answer.

Very fine idea!

Good luck with your program.

If you want a fun poetry writing class, let me know!
I could also do a workshop for teachers in the creative writing method.

(I would need someone to translate what I say in workshop into your language for those who do not have a working command of English yet.)  ~Karen, klewis@mcn.org (California Poets in the Schools)
