Sustainability Without Borders
Submitted By  J.Arthur,  Mar 3, 2010  |    Wed Mar 03 20:42:48 GMT 2010
Team Name : Sustainability Without Borders
University : Queen's University
Country : Canada

Sustainability without Borders, borders have redrawn the way people interact with each other and their surroundings, now it is time to look beyond those borders to ensure the sustainability of the world's vibrant cultures.

A Chinese Proverb says; Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. This initiative is about empowering people in the developing world by giving them access to life altering knowledge.

Our approach will include mission trips, and alliances with groups such as Engineers Without Borders, Habitat for Humanity and Water for People. The development of a simple laptop, much like the one laptop per child initiative, will contain open source information to help people in every economic class.

We are helping to build the future, sustainably.

STUDENT; THE BEDROCK TO ACHIEVING GREATNESS IN A SOCIETY

Africa in general and Nigeria in particular has been traumatized by poverty, ignorance, diseases and corruption. I could go on and on about the level of decadence that has characterized our existence, but the important question is; where is the way out? We are the solution, I’m totally convinced of only one way out and that is “STUDENT”. The student as a body will have to lead this crusade against depravity. I reckon that the greatest need of our society is to succeed because we have been so battered by failure in all aspect of life and by my definition of success, ‘it is looking out for human need and reaching out to meet that need’. I believe strongly that the moment students understand success and its technical know-how, then our society will undergo change positively because we are the salt of the earth and the light of our world. We would have to take the destiny of our continent in our hands and change it for good, stand up and redefine societal value and push our society into greatness.

On my part, I have no problem with our leaders and their predecessors because I don’t think am better of until I’ve done what is meant to be done. If in quote they’ve all failed us, including our parent as it were, are we also going to fail posterity that depends on us?

Education is paramount in a society. If this is so, we would need to redefine educational standard, ready to give what it takes, it input and output in our society and this can only be achieved by students who understands the technical know-how of success and how it is achievable in a society. Had kept on mentioning students and not masses because we are truly the bedrock of the society.

Talking about the masses, I realize that it is impossible to change the mindset of an African man, Nigeria in particular from its initial state by just mere speech; it doesn’t walk that way in this part of the world. It is obvious they are tired listening to agitations, suggestions made by so called doctors, lawyers and the likes. They want doers, men in action, people who are ready to take that position of true leadership.

Doc on Wheels - Bringing free health care services
Submitted By  mjcho,  Mar 3, 2010  |    Wed Mar 03 16:38:12 GMT 2010
Team Name : Doc on Wheels
University : The University of Texas at Austin
Country : United States

Our goal is to bring free health care services to the neighborhoods in need through mobile bus. Analogous to Meals-on-Wheels-method, our bus will visit neighborhoods that often suffer significant decrease in the quality of citizens’ lives due to lack of care received. These families sometimes even do not receive most basic health care, and suffer diseases that are easily preventable.

Therefore, the mission of “Doc on Wheels” is to reduce the number of people suffering these diseases and to maintain the health of general population by bringing free clinic to the neighborhoods weekly.  Instead of having needy family to invest time and money to receive care from clinics or hospitals, we will bring those services to them through partnership with local medical school and hospitals.

Students, Families, Professionals: One Community
Submitted By  LegacyEventPlanners,  Mar 2, 2010  |    Tue Mar 02 15:25:54 GMT 2010
Team Name : Legacy Event Planners
University : North Carolina State University
Country : United States

Legacy Event Planners' (LEP’s) mission is to unite students, families and professionals, simultaneously empowering these groups to become positive changemakers in their communities through organizing community and charity events. Through developing these events students gain invaluable service-learning experience, communities strengthen their ties with Universities, which can better serve them, and professionals greatly increase their involvement in the educational community and the community at large.

LEP is designed as a service-learning organization to exemplify the values of civic engagement and multidisciplinary, life-long learning. Our main goal is to break down the "College on the Hill" stereotype, to illustrate that when communities work together to help local causes and to educate one another, they can better mobilize resources to address issues of development, environmentalism, and charitable fundraising. Currently, LEP is the only non-profit in the area focusing on improving the Raleigh community through cooperatively planning and promoting community and educational events, in order to raise funds for charity, assist students in their studies, and provide networking opportunities for the community, as a whole.

As the only organization of our kind in the area, we are working to better connect and engage the local community. To assist us in these efforts, we are developing database technology that will enable community members and business owners to post volunteer/career opportunities for students, and will enable students to post on-campus opportunities for collaboration with community members and local businesses owners. In the future, we hope to expand and offer our services to communities beyond Raleigh.

Eureka! - Find better ways to do good
Submitted By  angienadia,  Mar 1, 2010  |    Tue Mar 02 05:54:19 GMT 2010
Semi-finalist Team Name : Eureka!
University : Harvard Business School
Country : United States

Despite a growing number of volunteers, their full potential has not yet been realized. This is because most volunteer opportunities still consist of generic labor, and it takes lots of work to find the right match. Volunteers often manually sift through hundreds of search results on volunteer opportunities, only to find that they end up stuffing envelopes. Simultaneously, non-profits struggle with funding shortages and limited access to specialized services. Eureka! bridges these gaps by helping altruistic individuals apply their skills for good.

Eureka! is a website that automatically recommends organizations in need of your skills. Think Amazon book recommendations for volunteering (If you like Kiva, you might also like DonorsChoose). After a keyword input, we use “20 Questions”-type process to narrow down recommendations you would find most interesting. We constantly improve recommendation quality by collecting feedback and browsing input over time to make your recommendations more personalized - the more you use Eureka!, the better your recommendations get!

Providers can contribute services to non-profits directly, or donate compensation from for-profit work to causes of their choice. Volunteers have more options to serve. Non-profits receive free specialized services and donations. For-profits build their reputation in social responsibility while also receiving skilled services.

To foster visibility and engagement, Eureka! integrates with other social media like Facebook/Twitter and maintains public leaderboards that rank users on hours volunteered, donations generated, etc.

Unlike other websites, Eureka! simplifies the search process and engages socially-minded individuals at a personal level. Let’s find better ways to do good!

Beyond the Campus
Submitted By  Beyond the Hilltop,  Mar 1, 2010  |    Tue Mar 02 03:51:56 GMT 2010
Team Name : Beyond the Hilltop
University : Georgetown University
Country : United States

Our Background:

Beyond the Campus was born from the success of an entrepreneurial venture by Georgetown University senior Matt Duffy.  After a close family friend passed away from cancer, Matt decided to do something to help stop the disease.  He and some friends drew upon their initiative and started Beyond the Hilltop Tours to give students a taste of life outside the college-bubble, and donated all of the money to cancer treatment.  Their success gave the young entrepreneurs an idea.  If they could start a socially conscious business, why not help others to do the same?

Our Model:

Beyond the Campus (BtC) seeks to create similar organizations on college campuses across the country.  The organization would have two parts, an entrepreneurial business to generate revenue, and a service focused project to help people in need.  BtC would first help young entrepreneurs start a sustainable business, for example a walking tour company styled “Beyond the Campus Tours.” From that business, 70% of the profit will go directly to a social project, while 30% goes to help start up new entrepreneurial ventures.  Projects might consist of tutoring at-risk youth, repairing deteriorating houses, whatever the local community needs.

BtC Model 1

The benefits to this are that the commitment to a cause is shared by both non-profit and for-profit sides of the organization; important skills such as marketing are shared across the organization; and, as this investment in student entrepreneurship becomes profitable, the new businesses themselves begin contributing, and there’s an exponential increase in the good we can do!

Building home for the needy.

Team Name : FEA USP
University : Faculdade de Economia e Administração
Country : Brazil

Our goal is to ease the problems created by the poor quality of housing conditions in the outskirts of Brazilians’ cities. Every day the media shows landslides in those communities caused by poor houses’ infrastructures, thus killing hundreds every year. Another problem caused by the house conditions is the poor access to water and sewer systems and several diseases (like asthma and bronchitis).

Collecting, through donation from construction companies, wastes from various construction companies, and manage to deliver it to cities’ periphery, in a attempt to offer better material to improve those homes located in slums.

In this way, those two problems previously cited, can be minimized (of course, not completely solved). First, if the residual material from construction is not processed at all, it just becomes rubble, and the only destination is to throw it away to some land that could be better used. And this rubble would take centuries to be processed naturally. Second, through a process of recycling, the population that lives in slums will be benefited from it, through community help to build better home for themselves.

This is a bold idea, but it doesn’t mean that it isn’t realistic. All parties involved gain something from this, the people improve their living, health and sanitary conditions, the companies pays less taxes, the government finances a project that improves the life quality of it’s citizens and us, team FEA USP, finally see a solution that improves peoples lives.

A photograph from a ordinary slum at the periphery of Brazil's big cities.

Another photograph, of a very common situation for those who live in the suburbs.

Globalpedia is a global networking site that will be available for non-profits and other service organizations as well as individual people.

The non-profits and service organizations will be able to put up a short biography about their organization, pictures, and other links on their page.  They can also put up key words such as “animal rescue”, “eco-friendly” and other descriptive words that people will be able to search by.  There will also be a mapping site that will link to the area in the world where their initiatives are focused.  Another unique aspect of the site is a place to donate monetarily to the specific organization.

An individual person can also create a site and can put up information about what they are interested in (“helping children”, “Cancer cure” etc.)  These will help link them up with organizations around the globe that serve specific interests they are interested in.  Then, a person can either contact the organization directly, make a pledge, or donation through the site. There will also be algorithms established if the person wants to donate a certain amount (for example $1,000) to a certain amount of charities (example: 5).  Then, the algorithm will best match up their criteria for the charities to make sure that the donation goes directly to a charity they will most likely support.  All the organizations that are recognized non-profits through the government will be able to send tax write-off’s to the supporters of that group.

Global Exchange Network
Submitted By  angelabui,  Mar 1, 2010  |    Mon Mar 01 20:57:50 GMT 2010
Team Name : Practical Idealists
University : Seattle University
Country : United States

Idea

Many cultural heritages are endangered in the world because of the lack of information and educational resources.  Our idea is to create a website that serves as an international network with the purpose of promoting cultural awareness and social change through informal education.  People and organizations around the world would have profiles and be linked with the goal of cultural exchange in the form of enriching courses.  People of any background from any country would post courses in which they teach on anything from obscure languages to ethnic cooking to arts and crafts.  Travelers headed to a country could search for posted courses to enhance their trip or even be inspired to travel for the purpose of taking the course itself.

Current Problem:

Currently other websites offer a partial solution.  There’s a plethora of sites that offer social and professional networking, formal teaching exchanges, social tourism, international volunteer opportunities, etc.  As wonderful as the World Wide Web is, information fragmentation and overload can be impeding.

Our Solution:

Enter: Global Exchange Network.  Our aim is to be the “Google” of all cultural awareness initiatives.  Aside from networking diversity-focused individuals, we will be the place where people can find various types of resources such as:

·         Information about courses posted by others

·         Teaching and learning through the web

·         Listing of NGOs and educational institutions related to cultural diversity

·         International volunteer opportunities

We don't want to compete with other sites, but rather be a site that centralizes this wealth of information.

Rangoon Project
Submitted By  ARM,  Mar 1, 2010  |    Mon Mar 01 19:50:34 GMT 2010
Team Name : A.R.M
University : Ashesi University College
Country : Ghana

U.S President Barack Obama said, “The 21st Century will be shaped by what happens not just in Rome or Moscow or Washington, but by what happens in Accra as well.” However, the situation in basic elementary schools in Accra does not seem promising enough.

The idea is to set up an organization made up of college students with the aim of upgrading existing underprivileged and dilapidated public basic schools in Accra. In a country where the youth are not encouraged to take up their own initiatives, we believe this project would go a long way to changing the mindsets of the young people in the country and empower them with the faith to create the change they want to see.

The purpose behind this initiative is deeply rooted in our belief that the transformation of our nation into a world powerhouse can never be realised without our youth; highly motivated youth.

In our opinion, the main problem with Africa, and with Ghana in perspective, is not just poor healthcare, mismanagement of natural resources, lack of technology, entrepreneurship or even corruption – it is the poor standard of education and the negative mindset of the people. It is in this vein that we embark on this project to transform the nation - one school at a time.  ARM30.0

VolunteerHub: Social Networking Website for the Volunteer World
Submitted By  andyr,  Mar 1, 2010  |    Mon Mar 01 19:36:32 GMT 2010
Team Name : VolunteerHub
University : McGill University
Country : Canada

Imagine if volunteering were actually free; if the thousands of grassroots organizations worldwide had some way of displaying their invaluable work to the world; if getting involved weren’t so complicated; and, if many volunteering companies no longer took advantage of those they purportedly support?

After having volunteered through one such company on a project in Tanzania, we learned first-hand of the redundancies and inefficiencies of the system. We paid our placement fee to support a local Tanzanian school and orphanage, and most of our money was spent on administrative costs in the U.S. instead.

Disheartened by the experience, we began developing the concept for a social networking platform devoted to the volunteer world. Millions around the world have volunteered in some capacity, forming an incredible bank of knowledge, experience, and information that is currently untapped. We propose to bring all of this together in a user-friendly website that allows past volunteers to share their knowledge and experience with prospective volunteers looking for similar opportunities.

Let’s cut out the middle-man. Rather than paying an organization to find a volunteer placement for you, why not simply connect to other volunteers? Members of our network will have a full profile (think Facebook) where they can post information about the projects with which they have been involved. Users will be able to search for volunteer opportunities of interest to them, contact the members who have “been there and done that”, and be directly linked to the organizations that run these projects.

Imagination becomes reality.

One of the various steps to reduce poverty in this world is to provide education to poor children, who in turn can be a pillar of support for their family.Under the proposed project we will create a website which will list all the brilliant students of a Country.Listing of the candidates will be done from the school toppers of various schools through out the country as given by the school authorities. They will be given a wide range of topics where all the brilliant minds of the country will be competing and taking initiative in brainstorming sessions. The website will be one stop search for all the brialliant minds of a country who will be interacting with other people day in and day out. On this website the cases of students from poor background will be put up with the help of local village authorities and other Non profit organizations. The students will  pick up a case to educate depending upon their choice and will apply their brilliant minds to improve the education level of potential poor candidates and thereby bridging the gap between rural and urban education. The communication facilities between the two students will be provided by the Non profit organization or online donors. The students teaching and promoting education will be given funding for each case they take. The financial aspect will be depend upon the longitivity and effectivity of a particular student  to a particular poor student .More over this will generate leadership and other good qualities in urban brilliant students and at the same time promoting and bridging the rural and uraban education gap.More over these students will be given acadmic points also depending upon the no of effective cases they took in a year.
In short this website will act as :-

1) One stop search for all the brialliant minds of the country.
2) Brainstorming , future discussions regarding core issues  of a country and their possible solutions by these briallaint minds.
3)Education of rural people by the brialliant minds who will choose cases of their own choice and they will earn reward points and academic points also.
4)Briding the gap between rural and urban education depending upon the continuous communication between the students.
5)Through interaction, students will address the other core issues in the village and solve them by mutual discussions and solutions.
6)And last , reducing poverty through improving education

One of the focuses of volunteerism is the need to raise funds for the programmes that are undertaken. This is a significant yet difficult step which affects the success of the programme. One of the more common methods is soliciting donations from the public through sales and/or donation drives. However, this method yields relatively low output as compared to the amount of time and effort which could be channeled into the welfare of beneficiaries instead.

Acknowledging the rising focus on corporate social responsibility, our team suggests that the aspect of fund raising could be addressed at a corporate level. This practice is already in place with most registered charities. However, unlike large and well publisized charitable/volunteer organizations we believe that many smaller organizations and independent volunteer groups are relatively unknown in the corporate world and hence reap fewer donations. Although there are websites that cater to individual donors assisting their preferred charities, to our knowledge there are no such websites that would allow orgnizations/groups to approach and source for companies that might be keen on donating.

With our website, we hope to matchmake such groups with corporate donors who would be interested in their work. This would be achieved through allowing groups to upload profiles of their work. In addition, companies too can upload profiles indicating their preferred area of activity so that interested parties can contact them as well. Lastly, individuals too could sign up and gain direction in their volunteering/charitable goals by collaborating with the people holding subscriptions on the website. In this way, we hope to create more awareness of the projects being conducted by such groups while also giving corporations a means to display their commitment to social wellbeing.

In present generation every youngster thinks that he/she is the most knowledgeable person in the society. They think their parents are just too old to understand anything. So they kept on ignoring them in their family and make them feel that they are of no use now. They are just like a garbage in the house.
Secondly there are a lot of uneducated poor children in India. They neither have the funds nor they have the family support.Their family forces them to beg rather than earn.
I want to make a dharamshala where these old age people and these poor children will be made to live together. So that there experience  will b very very helpful to the poor kids.and we will make them do everything on their own and will pay them.It will make the senior citizens feel good at the last time of their lives and they can give give a lot to society by giving most of the experience to these kids. And hence make the standard of society high. And the kids will have a high confidence as they start earning and will dream of things other than begging or becoming thief or doing something unlawful.

All in all it will be raising the standard of the society and provide the poor an real opportunity to live a life as they wish to.

"Faith-in-Love Hour" -- innovative currency for Volunteer Incentive Platform

Semi-finalist Team Name : Clover

In China, due to the fact that social sector development is still in its infancy stage, it is difficult for NGOs to recruit enough volunteers. On the other hand, companies are willing to donate their products to NGOs but most of the time those goods are not what the NGOs need. Inspired by the commodity market mechanism based on the application of a universally accepted currency, we propose to create a virtual charity market with a new type of currency, which we call Faith-in-Love Hour (FLH), to boost China’s philanthropy.

This virtual market is to connect three parties: volunteers, NGO and disadvantaged people who need helps from volunteers, and companies who donate their products for charity purpose.

Volunteers can trade their volunteer service provided to NGOs and disadvantage individuals for real commodities in our virtual market supported by an online platform. NGOs offer us goods donated by their sponsors in exchange for volunteer service. Companies can also donate products directly to us in exchange for the certificate of FLH donation, which we hope to promote as a universal indicator for CSR measurement in China.

With the incentives that our solution provides to volunteers, we expect that the more sustainable volunteering activities will accelerate the building up of philanthropy environment in China, which further fuels the underlying rationale and engine of this currency.

Our volunteer incentive platform applies a nonprofit model, which mainly generates revenue from charging the volunteers the service fee when they trade their FLH for donated goods in our online virtual market. User-added image zhdo77210.0

HARNESSING INFORMATION FOR RURAL DEVELOPMENT AND TRANSFORMATION

Rural areas exist virtually in all parts of the world. It is apparent that each one of us has a link or the other to a specific rural community. When we take a vivid look at our sustenance, we would see that they all come from these rural communities. Industries depend largely on the rural areas for their raw materials in the sense that the dwellers  major occupation are in the field of agriculture.

Providing information for the rural communities will go along way to transform all spheres of life of the inhabitants of these communities. The information need of the rural communities could be coined to be “SEEP” ie Socio-Cultural, Economical, Educational, and Political but not restricted to this only because human need are in divers form. Thus, they would also need information that pertain to health, security, geographical and a host of others.

Information needs of rural dwellers

The trends in providing adequate information has shifted. Gone are the days when people do seek for one information or the other. But, nowadays, information that will help to improve the life of people needs to be disseminated without prior request. Information they said: Transform life, when you are not informed you are deformed.
