Pamphlets with a Purpose

The mission of Pamphlets with a Purpose (PWAP) is to teach hygienic practices through pictures.  PWAP will target those in slums and educate them on these practices. We would like to use pictures instead of text for people who are uneducated and are unable to read and write. This will give them an opportunity to help themselves and their families stay healthy and safer from common diseases, which can be avoided by practicing proper hygiene.  Each PWAP will have a step-by-step visual guide on how to live a more hygienic lifestyle.  The pamphlet topics will cover proper defection practices, sanitation of household materials, oral hygiene, hand-washing techniques, and grooming practices.  Let’s take oral hygiene as an example.  First, we would develop a systemic approach to proper hygiene by getting in contact with a dentist.  After perfecting the basic steps, we would create a pamphlet with several pictures.  The first picture would show a child with bad teeth. Then we would have another picture with him grabbing a toothbrush and toothpaste, or something similar that would be available in their village. The third picture would be of the child putting the toothpaste on his toothbrush and the rest of the pictures would continue onto the progression of proper oral hygiene.  Each PWAP would be a concise and detailed picture guide for proper hygiene, allowing anyone to be able to adapt the practices.

almost 70% population of Pakistan dwells in rural areas. surveys conducted amongst the poor population of these areas show that the female mortality rate is quite high. when analysed in detail, it was revealed, that as income is insufficient to fulifill the needs of all individual, the bread earners choose to neglect women and their basic life needs. consequently, these women catch severe diseases and end up dying a terrible death. thus, they are 'killed' because they are women. my idea is to build a center 'NIJAAT- The Salvation' for these women. NIJAAT will not only provide them a better place to live in but will also give them a purpose in life. the women brought here will be trained by professionals in their areas of interests for example, handicrafts, stitching, parlor courses, interior designing, typing and shorthand, first aid etc, then, their products (incase of handicrafts jewelleries and clothes) will be exposed to wider markets and also, a job portal will be set up which will bring the corporate sector to a new set of workforce to choose from. these women will be given jobs through this portals or in the former case, they'll be given the shops. in this way, they'll be self-sufficient. this will be a profitable venture because 50% of the total income will be given to the women while 30% will be sent to their families and 20% will be kept by the admin. this 20% of each individual's earning will be our profit. my idea, the NIJAAT helps these helpless women to transform their lives and become successful working individuals of the nation. layla.rajani90.0

I am happy to join with you today in what will go down in history as the greatest demonstration for imparting Education in the history of our world. By now every country and many Organizations (Profit making and non- profit making) have put in their efforts tangible and intangible to spread literacy throughout in different formats in last few decades. The critical factor that needs to be considered while learning from all earlier attempt is strive for sustainability. The ugly truth is the corporate social responsibility doesn’t help the best possible way. No doubt, that they really help but the matter of concern is the World needs more!  From Florida to France, Paris to Patna or on bigger scale the image is crystal clear no country or no continent is 100% Literate just a simple Why?

We have a dream that one day this world will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal with right to education."

We have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia, the farmers and their sons will be able to sit down at the table of brotherhood and discuss a better world.

We have a dream that one day even the all the continents rather all the direction, will be transformed into an oasis of education.

We have a dream that our children will one day live in a world where they will take this dream forward like science.

We believe to setup an organization which markets and provides education, if water, air and around the world can be bought as marketed surely education will be too! We aim to provide education worldwide helping existing education systems to make them more efficient and effective for a child to an adult who just wants to learn!

 We have a dream today!

Need identified: Sowing education

Target segment: Every developing individual who is striving to gain knowledge

How it’s going to be  rolled out:

Initially a survey would be conducted to determine the areas striving of education. Virtual mobile classrooms powered by solar energy and generators (fifty people to be educated at one time per class room) will be used for imparting education thereby involving low cost. Every fortnight practical workshops would be conducted by experts to enhance the skills and knowledge of students and transform them into a better individual.

Key differentiating factors: Social yet profit making. Courseware will be specially tailor made to meet the needs of these students. Imparting education in regional language along with English. Making earth a better place to live.

Empower trafficked girls to become catalysts of social change and lead the women’s revolution in India!
Submitted By  Trinatalukdar,  Mar 2, 2010  |    Wed Mar 03 07:48:58 GMT 2010
Team Name : Kranti
University : Christ University
Country : India

Our mission:
Kranti (Revolution) seeks to educate and empower girls (Revolutionaries) who have been trafficked. India’s trafficked girls are an untapped source of collective strength and Kranti seeks to unlock their potential by providing a healing home, comprehensive education, and leadership opportunities.

Why is Kranti necessary?
Current anti-trafficking programs in India are ineffective because they fail to educate or empower the girls before returning them to vulnerable situations that often facilitate retrafficking. Therefore, Kranti believes that it is time for a revolutionary approach to anti-trafficking.

How is Kranti different?
First, Kranti seeks to empower the Revolutionaries by putting their life choices – especially regarding education, careers, and marriage – back in their hands by helping them develop numerous, viable livelihood options. Secondly, Kranti focuses on developing them as activists and leaders for their chosen social causes. For example, one Revolutionary is passionate about environmental issues while another wants to be an activist-artist.

What will Kranti change?
Most importantly, Kranti seeks, through the Revolutionaries’ accomplishments, to redefine India’s gender stereotypes and value of women – a model where the Revolutionaries themselves address the root causes of India’s gender inequality. Their impact will grow exponentially as their voices spread Kranti’s choice-based models of education, empowerment and leadership for trafficked girls throughout the region.

Kranti girls' artwork and fun time!

 VoiceRaising links university students to a refugee community living in a developing country through one-on-one online tutoring. Using web-conferencing software to deliver online classes, students help refugees improve their English. At the end of each semester, students and refugees together produce blog entries to inform the university community about the refugees' stories and demonstrate the refugees’ improved English abilities.

VoiceRaising provides English classes to (1) improve the refugees’ job prospects, (2) widen the pool of potential community organizers who can appeal to the UN and others, and (3) prevent locals from exploiting the refugees by capitalizing on their inability to communicate. Additionally, by blogging, refugees improve their self-advocacy skills.  This enables the refugees to appeal to organizations which must deliver services to UN recognized refugees, and better enables unrecognized refugees to seek UN recognition.

Unlike other programs, VoiceRaising allows students to deliver direct services to the refugees on a long-term basis.  This unique quality provides natural information-gathering about the community, which is then enhanced by our focus on tutoring and blogging.  Information-gathering allows VoiceRaising or other campus groups to (1) generate effective services for the community or (2) develop plans for services that grassroots organizations abroad may then implement, thus improving the refugees’ welfare.  The information-gathering also benefits university students as it presents a contextualized understanding of the impoverished community that the classroom setting does not offer.

Help elderly - yourself in xx years

University : Harvard Business School
Country : United States

There are a number of developing countries that recently experienced financial crises: Argentina, Russia and number of Asian countries. There are no organizations such as AARP or FDIC insurance in these countries. Due to the crises and devaluation of currency, there were millions of hard-working professionals, now elderly, who lost all of their life savings (money were held in saving accounts in official banks). I believe we have social and ethical responsibility to support people who built this world for us. There is a lack of any social support for the elderly, any access to employment (employers don’t want to hire “old” people) or any government subsidies or insurance for those lost sums. Therefore, people who worked all their life are now forced into poverty or death.

In order to address these societal and government failures, this NGO will support the elderly in those countries through 1. Food Stamps to purchase groceries through affiliated stores; 2. Organized job fares to help find work (Currently employers are not interested in hiring these individuals due to responsibility for their pensions; we will subsidize, negotiate and find the jobs elderly can excel in); 3. Coverage of medication, surgeries; distribution of clothes and vitamins. In the long-run, the organization will work with governments to establish programs and support for elderly. In addition, we would like to partner with insurance companies to create a financial instrument against financial crises that would protect young professionals against similar outcome.

E-Mnenie: From no Democracy to E-Democracy in Russia
Submitted By  vshamanov,  Mar 1, 2010  |    Mon Mar 01 21:58:50 GMT 2010
Team Name : Intercollegiate Innovators
University : London School of Economics
Country : United Kingdom

Russia has no true democracy--no news here. All the nominal elements--elections, parliament, etc.--are there, but political voices are not expressed. For example, parliament has four parties, but only two of them are real: "Communist Party of Russian Federation" and "United Russia". There is no right wing and even hardly a left wing, since average age of CPRF members is 60-65 years old. As the result, Russian youth is apathetic at best and violently radical at worst.

The answer to this problem is to create a one-stop online resource for expression of people's opinions, for direct communication with elected officials, ministries and agencies, for petitioning, and polling. At the same time, this website would become a place for online representation of various officials and their offices.

In its final form, E-mnenie will provide services through which,
  • Russian citizens and residents will express their opinions individually and collectively;
  • NGOs (parties, associations, interest groups, charities) will represent themselves online, start petitions, polls, etc.;
  • Government offices will create profiles to collect feedback, post announcement, etc.;
  • Anybody would be able to make sense of Russian government by using interactive diagrams and search forms.

The distinct features of the website would be:
  • Automatic database to send letters and petitions to relevant officials;
  • User-friendly graphic representation of Russia's government that would simplify finding the relevant officials;
  • Integration with social media, including Vkontakte (aka "Russian Facebook"), Twitter, Youtube.
The outcomes of the project would be:
  • increased youth's political participation,
  • increased government accountability and transparency,
  • at least partial enlightenment on who is responsible for what in Russia.

stop child labor in pakistan - an approach

 Child labor is a very complicated development issue, effecting human society all over the world. It is a matter of grave concern that children are not receiving education and leisure which is important for their growing years, because they are stucked into commercial and laborious activities which is meant for people beyond their years.

Many world organizations have taken initiatives at micro and macro level to eliminate child labor; most countries of the world consider it highly inappropriate when a child below a certain age is put to work. What we believe is that best way to cater this issue is to target it from the grass root level, laws are also important but it will be more fruitful if we alternative ways to avoid child labor.

First we have to understand why we have child labor. The children are working for many reasons. In most cases people would think that these children are forced into working; although in some cases children go to work because their family is extremely poor and they feel they need to help get money. In other cases these children are physically forced into doing the work that no one else will do. A few cases are reported in which child’s family dies and he is left alone. Such children are either adopted and forced to work or are being sold and never given an option to choose other than labor.

We propose to design an education system which would help avoid child labor. This issue cannot be eliminated at once; we have to be flexible in our approach. Define short term and long term goals. In Pakistan we’re going to work on enhancing education, provision of vocational training to create employment opportunities for working children to reduce family’s dependency on their children and awareness raising programs, on children's rights.

We shall divide children in different age groups and educate them. Children below 8 years old won’t be given any direct vocational training. They will be given normal school education and personal grooming. From age 8 and above along with education our school will provide vocational training based on the aptitude of the students, so they can actually support their families while continuing education as well.

The Stoplight Project - Mitigating trafficking in India through holistic empowerment
Submitted By  tarasuri,  Mar 1, 2010  |    Mon Mar 01 15:11:40 GMT 2010
Team Name : The Stoplight Team
University : Harvard University
Country : United States

Every thirty seconds, a woman or child becomes a victim of trafficking. The horrors of the industry reflect a larger problem: the worldwide oppression of women and girls. But as Nick Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn, authors of Half the Sky, have noted, “Women and girls are not the problem. They are the solution.”

The Stoplight Project is a social enterprise that seeks to mitigate trafficking, and as a consequence, oppression of women, through this lens. We have developed our model with a commitment to economic and social empowerment, maximizing the social return on investment while also turning a profit. Our initiative seeks to empower trafficked women in the impoverished Perna Community of New Delhi, India with a sustainable job option helping to produce tank tops that will be marketed in North America. The business will be complemented by holistic community development programs.

At The Stoplight Project, we believe that we can harness the global marketplace to empower entire communities and forge a more peaceful world. We seek to fuse economic empowerment, community programs, and consumer education to mitigate trafficking and facilitate a transnational dialogue about social-change.

My project will reduce unemployment in Nigeria by establishing a first of its kind enterprise that will be wide & big enough to absorb labor in all fields of expertise which will in turn reduce the rate of unemployment, give rise to great economic activities & contribute immensely towards economic development of the country Nigeria.One of the major problems that Nigeria is facing at the moment is the problem of unemployment, which is increasingly affecting the country’s economic development day-in day-out. This is as a result of  job seekers ideas that is being  crippled, caged & limited to the thought of only been employed by the government,& so for this reason, they can never see beyond their boundaries. This as blindfolded people & cause them not to be conscious of whom they are & what they can do.Since I am looking at it from another perspective, my idea is to clear all the abandoned land areas left wasting for years and establish a first of it’s kind enterprise that will be wide & big enough to absorb labors in all fields of expertise.
 This will in turn reduce unemployment, absorb a number of people, & lead to a high rate of economic activity, all contributing to economic development.

Enhancing Support for Womyn Labor Migrants
Submitted By  krystle,  Feb 28, 2010  |    Mon Mar 01 02:10:10 GMT 2010
Team Name : Womyn Migrant Support
University : Georgetown University
Country : Philippines

The percentage of female migrant workers has increased over the years as the world economy increases its demand for cheap domestic labor from developing countries to fill the domestic labor gaps in rich countries. As a result, three problems arise. One, an emerging crisis for care as poor countries begin to see reduced social services in their schools and hospitals. Two, the perpetuation of gender and racial inequalities as women, who fit a particular race, class, and ethnicity become the main source of oppressive labor to accommodate a developed country's domestic needs. Third, their inherent status as an inferior alien class leaves women vulnerable to abuse and maltreatment from governments, employers, and recruitment agencies. Without any form of legitimate defense or checks and balances against receiving countries and the agencies that facilitate their migration, they will continue to be treated without regard to their human rights. Thus, this project seeks to create a directory of aid workers, organizations, businesses, NGOs, and agencies that are willing to be a part of a nation wide team to help labor migrants seek redress for injustices. A directory will be tailored specific for each country and will be distributed to all public domains.

Education is the basis of knowledge; it is also a foundation of every successful institution. Education is brought to grassroots where awareness is created for political affairs and human rights. Children and the aged would be taught about their basic human rights and civic responsibilities.
Further more from the knowledge acquired from education i intend to create a way for free and fair elections at a larger scope, this will entail a good candidacy check, every individual registers at a voter, he or she wou8ld be issued with an identity card which as a result of technology, would be functional only on the thumb of the individual. An electrical ballot box would be provided which contains slots for all the parties contesting in an election instead of an individual ballot box. When the voter swipes his or her card on the party choice, the individual would wait for some seconds and the thumb prints on the identification card confirmed with the person in possession, then the vote is registered under the selected party and it cannot be used twice until the card in renewed. The voting centers would be equipped with securities and cameras’ meaning that any camera tampered with a state of emergency is called on the centre which finds out what happened, controls it or rules out votes from that centre
A website would be created whereby the people can share their views and opinions on current political state and ways of improving it, also a provision for the legislative for youths.

Sarswati Peace School: Building Hope for Nepalese Children
Submitted By  Peace Nepal,  Feb 27, 2010  |    Sun Feb 28 05:59:09 GMT 2010
Team Name : Peace Nepal
University : St. Olaf College
Country : United States

The Dell Social Innovation Award will help to build parts of he first peace school in Nepal to help a nation torn apart by a decade-long civil war (1996-2006). The Sarswati Peace School will be a secular temple of knowledge, peace and reconciliation to more than 250 children aged 4-15 years affected by the violence of the war, empowering them to reclaim their passion and joy while providing the academic and psychological support they require to lead whole and healed lives. Our integrated approach of immersing students in the fine arts (music, art, storytelling, drama and theater), supported by our traditional community values (respect, kindness and humility), can serve as a practical model for other war-ravaged nations on the path to peace.

 Nepal’s civil war left an overwhelming number of children physically and psychologically impacted, but the school will give them the tools and time they deserve to become architects of a peaceful future for Nepal and the world. We believe that this project will pave the way for a bright future not only for children affected by the civil war in Nepal, but for the war-torn communities around the world who need to see that conflict resolution, healing and joy can be an integral part of the school experience.

 With newfound friends across class lines and a welcoming school environment, the young children will be motivated to attend school, think freely, and not worry about being segregated. We will break our nation’s cycle of hatred and poverty by educating a generation of young people according to the ethos of equality, kindness and mutual respect, and offer parents a path forward in understanding and accepting the Sudras as our equals and friends.

India is a land where 45% of the population lies below the poverty line.The rich continue to grow richer while th epoor becomes much more poorer.The root cause of the poor becoming poorer is the lack of equal oppurtunity for them.They are not being given proper education or vocational training to earn a living.All the differntly abled,homeless and people belonging to the below poverty line class in the district have to come under one roof where they will be given classes on various vocational jobs suiting their interest like sewing,cashew picking,masala making etc which do not need a much capital interest to start with. suresharjun30.0

My idea is to help reduce to bearest minimum  racism and xenophobia using a different approach from the stereotype approach: stereotype such as  pointing accussing fingers or trying to punish defaulters.

Rather I have device a new approach by educating people theough the internet and magazine .By creating  a forum  forum for  interracial interaction  and above all  awarding individuals and organisations that have good practice towards foriegners.
