In government and politics (as operationally practiced in places like Nigeria), the people are often left out; that is, the political processes on our continent often exclude the participation and inclusion of everyday citizens - thus restricting decision-making to the elite and the people proximate to the centre. In effect, the communities on the margins are silenced.
Our question is: What if they had a say? How can we help amplify the voices of the people in the margins?
Our answer is ChangeAloud!
Through a combination of formal education and performance arts (drama, music, and etcetera), ChangeAloud!, an NGO, will train locals in performance arts directed at educating indigenes about their rights and their choices. Trainees, selected from the communities, will sing, dance, act before live audiences (and television audiences as well). The themes of all performances are participation, inclusion and civic rights and duties. However, the element of competition will be included so as to generate entertainment for television audiences - who will be invited to vote for their best performances. Funds raised through votes will be directed towards rewarding participants and building a communal fund base. ChangeAloud! makes it possible to creatively combine reality-television, performance arts, civic education, and community development in a single NGO!
At the formal level, ChangeAloud! will develop exciting school curricula that will (in partnership with education boards) be developed for children at a primary level.
