SevaCorp: tackling street-level problems in developing countries
Submitted By  dvaze,  Mar 2, 2010  |    Wed Mar 03 07:45:05 GMT 2010
Team Name : SevaCorp
University : University of Cambridge
Country : United Kingdom

Potholed roads. Faulty streetlights. Dirty public spaces.

Relative to some of the challenges developing countries face, problems like these would be easy to fix. Yet due to corruption, disorganization, or sheer inertia at the local government level, they often go neglected. The hazards and hardships of poorly maintained public spaces and services are usually borne by the poorest citizens: those who can least afford to pay for a viable workaround.

SevaCorp is a non-profit organization proposing a simple way to make local governments fulfill this basic responsibility: recruiting teams of retirees and at-home mothers to follow up on problems in their neighborhoods.

How it works: SevaCorp recruits a team of retirees and at-home mothers in a neighborhood. They identify problems in the environment/services that government needs to fix. They document problems using disposable cameras and write letters to local government officials, identifying the problem and requesting a timeline for it to be resolved. The letters and pictures are aggregated by SevaCorp and sent centrally through the organization, to protect the writers’ identities. After a week, if there is no reply, another round of letters is sent. After four weeks, if there is still no response or no action from government, the case is publicized on the SevaCorp website and circulated amongst the news media. Once a case is resolved, the relevant government department is recognized on the SevaCorp website.

E-Mnenie: From no Democracy to E-Democracy in Russia
Submitted By  vshamanov,  Mar 1, 2010  |    Mon Mar 01 21:58:50 GMT 2010
Team Name : Intercollegiate Innovators
University : London School of Economics
Country : United Kingdom

Russia has no true democracy--no news here. All the nominal elements--elections, parliament, etc.--are there, but political voices are not expressed. For example, parliament has four parties, but only two of them are real: "Communist Party of Russian Federation" and "United Russia". There is no right wing and even hardly a left wing, since average age of CPRF members is 60-65 years old. As the result, Russian youth is apathetic at best and violently radical at worst.

The answer to this problem is to create a one-stop online resource for expression of people's opinions, for direct communication with elected officials, ministries and agencies, for petitioning, and polling. At the same time, this website would become a place for online representation of various officials and their offices.

In its final form, E-mnenie will provide services through which,
  • Russian citizens and residents will express their opinions individually and collectively;
  • NGOs (parties, associations, interest groups, charities) will represent themselves online, start petitions, polls, etc.;
  • Government offices will create profiles to collect feedback, post announcement, etc.;
  • Anybody would be able to make sense of Russian government by using interactive diagrams and search forms.

The distinct features of the website would be:
  • Automatic database to send letters and petitions to relevant officials;
  • User-friendly graphic representation of Russia's government that would simplify finding the relevant officials;
  • Integration with social media, including Vkontakte (aka "Russian Facebook"), Twitter, Youtube.
The outcomes of the project would be:
  • increased youth's political participation,
  • increased government accountability and transparency,
  • at least partial enlightenment on who is responsible for what in Russia.

Revolutionizing Global Education in the Classroom
Submitted By  Elephant Tale,  Mar 1, 2010  |    Mon Mar 01 12:34:53 GMT 2010
Team Name : Elephant Tale
University : University of Western Ontario
Country : Canada

 The democratic deficit existent in our current society poses a great obstacle in allowing us to create the kind of sustained social change many of us wish to see in the world. Many of the social and environmental policies presently implemented in our political systems are not conducive to support the creation of sustained social change, as they perpetuate inequality and a system of dependency on foreign aid. Therefore, we need to end this democratic deficit and have informed and active citizens pressing governments to reform these policies so that social and environmental justice can persist and be sustainable. Furthermore to achieve this means it is important for our society to be ethical consumers as many of the manufacturers and distributors who deliver the products and services we consume produce them through a system that perpetuates poverty, human rights violations and environmental degradation.

To achieve these goals, Elephant Tale creates and delivers lesson plans that cover Ontario Secondary School curriculum in a manner that is interactive, engaging and relevant for students while invoking within its students the inspiration, capacity and knowledge to effectively engage politically and consume ethically to create sustained social and environmental justice. With regard to delivering the lesson plans, we aspire to send a group of University students who are highly knowledgeable about social and environmental justice, in addition to being experienced in facilitation and education to present the lesson plans in high school classrooms.

Enhancing Support for Womyn Labor Migrants
Submitted By  krystle,  Feb 28, 2010  |    Mon Mar 01 02:10:10 GMT 2010
Team Name : Womyn Migrant Support
University : Georgetown University
Country : Philippines

The percentage of female migrant workers has increased over the years as the world economy increases its demand for cheap domestic labor from developing countries to fill the domestic labor gaps in rich countries. As a result, three problems arise. One, an emerging crisis for care as poor countries begin to see reduced social services in their schools and hospitals. Two, the perpetuation of gender and racial inequalities as women, who fit a particular race, class, and ethnicity become the main source of oppressive labor to accommodate a developed country's domestic needs. Third, their inherent status as an inferior alien class leaves women vulnerable to abuse and maltreatment from governments, employers, and recruitment agencies. Without any form of legitimate defense or checks and balances against receiving countries and the agencies that facilitate their migration, they will continue to be treated without regard to their human rights. Thus, this project seeks to create a directory of aid workers, organizations, businesses, NGOs, and agencies that are willing to be a part of a nation wide team to help labor migrants seek redress for injustices. A directory will be tailored specific for each country and will be distributed to all public domains.

Education is the basis of knowledge; it is also a foundation of every successful institution. Education is brought to grassroots where awareness is created for political affairs and human rights. Children and the aged would be taught about their basic human rights and civic responsibilities.
Further more from the knowledge acquired from education i intend to create a way for free and fair elections at a larger scope, this will entail a good candidacy check, every individual registers at a voter, he or she wou8ld be issued with an identity card which as a result of technology, would be functional only on the thumb of the individual. An electrical ballot box would be provided which contains slots for all the parties contesting in an election instead of an individual ballot box. When the voter swipes his or her card on the party choice, the individual would wait for some seconds and the thumb prints on the identification card confirmed with the person in possession, then the vote is registered under the selected party and it cannot be used twice until the card in renewed. The voting centers would be equipped with securities and cameras’ meaning that any camera tampered with a state of emergency is called on the centre which finds out what happened, controls it or rules out votes from that centre
A website would be created whereby the people can share their views and opinions on current political state and ways of improving it, also a provision for the legislative for youths.

ChangeAloud!: a subject to change the subjects
Submitted By  Akachukwu Odera,  Feb 28, 2010  |    Sun Feb 28 14:14:55 GMT 2010
Team Name : Odera and Nnamdi

In government and politics (as operationally practiced in places like Nigeria), the people are often left out; that is, the political processes on our continent often exclude the participation and inclusion of everyday citizens - thus restricting decision-making to the elite and the people proximate to the centre. In effect, the communities on the margins are silenced.

Our question is: What if they had a say? How can we help amplify the voices of the people in the margins?
Our answer is ChangeAloud!

Through a combination of formal education and performance arts (drama, music, and etcetera), ChangeAloud!, an NGO, will train locals in performance arts directed at educating indigenes about their rights and their choices. Trainees, selected from the communities, will sing, dance, act before live audiences (and television audiences as well). The themes of all performances are participation, inclusion and civic rights and duties. However, the element of competition will be included so as to generate entertainment for television audiences - who will be invited to vote for their best performances. Funds raised through votes will be directed towards rewarding participants and building a communal fund base. ChangeAloud! makes it possible to creatively combine reality-television, performance arts, civic education, and community development in a single NGO!

At the formal level, ChangeAloud! will develop exciting school curricula that will (in partnership with education boards) be developed for children at a primary level.

Fonet - Implementing New form of Internet through Mobile Phone

Walk in to one old poor man's house and ask him to open the google page. Do you think he will open the google site...? Absolutely No, the reach of internet is only for the developed countries and young people of some developing countries. Because the computer is unknown variable to them.
Ok...Now Check his packet, you will surely find one small device called 'mobile phone'. Yes, the Mobilephone has got tremendous reach with all kind of people.

So my idea is to implement a new form of information sharing innovation through gsm mobile phones. Now you may ask me, the internet(GPRS) is already available in mobile phone, why you are unnecessarily wasting your time. But, my answer is why the old man doesnt use the gprs via his mobile phone. because his brain doesnt get the efficient usability of internet. So we have to feed him. Once we feed, we need not continue.

My concept is to make easily understandable for all kind of brains from all over the world. A person is very well in making a call, receiving a call from his mobile. Likewise, he/she has to do well in this internetworking facility via gsm phones. The user interface will be in all languages and it can be interfaced with TVs, PCs. The Architecture used here is GSM, by modifying some protocols we can achieve this facility. Through this anyone can able to obtain a real efficient information from outside world.

It is well known that the development of any country depends on the form of goverment the country is practising,the most commonly use forms of goverment today is democracy. This give rise to the need to conduct free and fair election. Due to nature of human i.e we are prone to error when doing things repeatedly and can easily be manipulated base on the current event. Due to this fact, the need to use an accurate and rigid system came up.and this give of the idea of developing an e-voting System which will automate the process of conducting election,counting vote and determination of winner. omostcomputer60.0

Sisi ni Amani ("We are Peace") - Mapping Peace in Kenya
Submitted By  RachelBrown,  Feb 11, 2010  |    Thu Feb 11 20:29:31 GMT 2010
Semi-finalist Team Name : Sisi ni Amani
University : Tufts University
Country : United States

In 2008, over 1000 citizens died in post-election violence that tore apart the fabric of Kenyan society. With reports of arms buildups and rising tensions surfacing throughout the country, the prospect for a peaceful 2012 elections appears dim. Sisi ni Amani (“We are Peace” in Swahili) provides an alternative to violence by using crowdsourcing technology and innovative media to map, connect, and highlight current peace initiatives in Kenya, strengthening the Kenyan peace movement leading up to the 2012 elections.

By using a groundbreaking yet proven open source method for crowdsourcing and mapping peace initiatives online, Sisi ni Amani will enable individual citizens to map instances of peace they see in their communities and to subscribe to updates on local peace initiatives. Drawing upon this online platform and the needs identified by peace leaders, Sisi ni Amani will hold a series of focus groups and capacity-building workshops among Kenya’s peace actors to build crucial relationships and share common experiences. Peace efforts will be publicized through a series of film vignettes of these peace initiatives, filmed in partnership with Hot Sun Films, a film school based in Kenya’s largest slum, and used to publicize these initiatives through online media and in matatus, a major form of public transportation that features videos for its passengers.

Building on the courageous work of Kenyans, Sisi ni Amani will add strength to the disconnected peace movement by raising awareness about the work of inspiring initiatives and providing peace activists with opportunities for publicity and networking. RachelBrown2490.0

To encourage individual responsibility, integrity, and freedom from government abuse, I offer a cell phone application to allow its user to quickly evaluate an automaker's or a bank's involvement with the 2008 and 2009 U.S. bailouts of those industries.  The app will signal the user as to whether the seller received such bailout money.  I later plan to expand to apps that identify a business's character in response to the user's preferences.

Social and information networks are most important tool for empowering poor people. This social venture would create social networks among the people who have to fight  for survival in everyday life without electricity, water and food security. The venture would gather important information from villages and cities considering about the needs, problems and other social information.  After the information is gathered from the area, venture would create network with people who have similar needs and problems and link them other social companies like micro finance provider or they could link them with other NGOs that operate in the area. If the survey can show that in the area is more than one village that needs for instance clean water. Information could be used to find solutions together with the villages and water providers. Sky is the limit how you can help with the gathered information.

Local people could gather information with help of information technology  about: children, drugs/crime, education, election/governance, energy usage, environment/climate change, health, human rights, peace & security, economic development and about needs of water, food electricity, micro finance and medication. Also venture could provide information to volunteer workers who could direct their help more efficiently.

This social venture would help individuals to be part of larger group to fight against corruption or just ease the everyday struggle. This Venture would help other social ventures to find healthy markets. This venture would share the information to the world to help people to help.

India's population-1 Billion
Voting percentage - 30%
Expense/ Poll- $50 Billion
So less voting percentage in elections is due to Several reasons that include- Specific person at specific point voting, Vast distance to travel, Not proper transport, Criminal Incidence, and ofcourse Laziness(yes strange but true).

By making a network polling through web by alloting specific ID's or even using Bio metric Identities inspite of Paper voter ID cards which governmet issues to each and every citizen we can regularize the vote pattern and even move on to Mobile Voting later on.  a1zhar40.0

The traditional paper voting system that has been under practice in Pakistan for many years do not gurantees the precision and at times very time consuming and involves high cost. Through our idea of E-voting one can ensure following benefits like accuracy, cost saving, speed etc in addition to transparency that will allow the democracy to run smoothly and yield benefits of fair selection. The issue of the fair and transparent election has been the concern in Pakistani politics for many years and our idea will be an effort to resolve this issue moreover overcoming other shortcomings of traditional voting system. Economic improvement in Bosnia and Herzegovina
Submitted By  Mia Omerika,  Jan 8, 2010  |    Fri Jan 08 22:23:46 GMT 2010
Team Name : Mia Omerika
University : American University
Country : Bosnia and Herzegovina

Bosnia and Herzegovina is the small and undeveloped country where people do not have many choices for economic improvement. There are many people who are not working even if they are educated. Corruption in BiH is constantly growing and people are the ones who suffer the most. Politicians in this country are intent only for their interest, not for the interest of all. Since the BiH is the nation which has three presidents, religion become more expressive and it makes problems in our economy. To make nation stronger I would advise people how to save money. The first idea that fell to my mind is that people should use more public transport instead to drive with own transport. Second, BiH citizens should consume more domestic products and export them to the other countries. In that way they will help in increasing of revenue in our industries. Third, even there are many unemployed but educated people; I would encourage young people to educate because the education is wealth. Also by opening more sport centers, young people could be most actively in sport. There are no opportunities for young people to show their talents and that’s way the most of them are using drugs and alcohol. So we can change a lot in our country if we try to, but the main problem is in encouraging people to act and take risk if it is necessary.
