Well im from Colombia( South America) and the idea that i have is to create a group of libraries to go to the farest  points of the country, as all of you knows Colombia is in SOME parts a very poor country, and maybe some of you knows too that Colombia is a country with many rivers that goes up to some of these poor towns where is no an school for the children, so with my program of sailing libraries i want to teach all the childrens a litlle bit of the geography and history of Colombia and of the world too, the importance of this program is in the childrens, that dosent have the oportunity yo goes to schools to stop the poverty in theirs regions or towns, is another way to teach the persons about the importance of the knowledge.

To treat oneself without danger.

Knowing that one poisoning in two is due to medicines, I think it is necessary to find a solution, so I worked on the medicine cabinet of particulars. Of course, everybody has not a medicine cabinet but different places to put away his medicines like boxes or drawers. These different  places have not been made for a correct use of  medicines. Often enough, we can see boxes with a lot of medicines use-by-date, without notice or accessible to children. Actually, until now nothing has been made to limit the risks of people who treat themselves.

User-added image

In order to prevent use-by-date or contra-indicated medicines, I wanted to create a medicine cabinet composed by different parts, as a medical record. I decided to organize medicines in function of habits and priorities, thanks to four doors.

In the different sections, the user can arrange his radiography, his child health record, his first-aid kit and his medicines.

Moreover in order to improve the use of medicines, I created different kind of storages in function of the shapes of the medicines ( box, bottle, tube).

For safety reasons, I wished to forbid the access of young children so that I created a locking system.

The key element in my project is the using of the technology of RFID tag which memorizes a lot of information. These tags could be used to know the dosage of each medicine or their use-by-date, thanks to detectors inserted in the cabinet.

All these information are communicated by speech synthesis. So when he wishes it, the user can press a button on the medicine cabinet to have more information about his medicines (date of use, dosages and contra-indications).

Nowadays, these RFID tags are not much used in pharmaceutical industry. They can only be found in products which create medicine trafficking. In this case the tags own information about the maker and permit to follow the medicine box all over the world.

The aim of my project is to reduce the number of poisoning and to help people to treat themselves in a better way, by giving them information about their medicines, as much as possible. Marion D'Halluin40.0

Seeds for Light

The Dark Situation

Harnessing energy is a means to develop one’s country because it allows the use of new technologies, promote education, develop infrastructure and improve the standard of living.  So here are the facts about Indonesia. 35 % of the total population has no access to electricity. These Indonesians live in the dark because the energy supply can’t keep up with the growing demand and of the existing poverty in the country. Of the 240, 271, 522 individuals residing in the country, 14.5 % of them are living below the poverty line. These aren’t just numbers, they are human beings.

An Enlightening Solution

The “Seeds for Light” program will educate a chosen village, who has no access to electricity, on how to extract biodiesel from Jatropha Plant.  A percentage of the biodiesel will be sold to financially sustain the village while the remaining percentage will be used to power the generator provided to them by this program. This program will address the issues of poverty, environmental instability and the energy crisis. jatropha biofuel process flowchart
The Illuminated Future

The chosen village will serve as a beacon of light to all Indonesians by setting an example of how the use of renewable source of energy can beneficial. Not only will this idea improve the quality of people’s lives, it will also aid Indonesia in addressing two of its Millennium Goals: 1) Eradicating poverty and hunger; and 2) Ensuring environmental sustainability. The future of Indonesia may just get brighter. illuminator80.0

Prostitution in India
Submitted By  arnavchhabra,  Yesterday  |    Mon Feb 08 06:13:51 GMT 2010
Team Name : BeautyNotBody
University : University of Texas at Austin
Country : United States

In India, "about 200 girls and women enter prostitution daily of which 20% are below 15 years of age."

“It is estimated that more than 50% of the prostitutes in Mumbai [the corporate capital of India] are HIV-positive”

“In India, 70% of prostitutes in a survey reported being beaten by the police and more than 80% had been arrested without evidence.”

Shocked? Yes, we were too. However, most people don’t do anything about the problem and just consider it an inherent social fault of the society. We, on the other hand, disagree with the previous statement and intend to eliminate this “red-light” profession, one by one, saving one woman at a time. BeautyNotFlesh is an organization that aims to help take women off of streets who are subjected to prostitution. A major goal of our group is to rehabilitate these women and help them find jobs that will eventually help them attain financial independence and professional satisfaction.

Why they chose prostitution?

Each person’s story is unique. However, most of them have the same underlying problem.

  • Lack of financial resources to support oneself or family
  • Rejected by families
  • Mother is a prostitute
  • Duped by friends and guardians as pimps
  • Sold by lovers and husbands

Solution Proposals:

In lieu of all the causes above, we make proposals that not only intend to reduce the occurrence of prostitution, but also those that help the women who are already into this profession. Our plan is very unique. We base our solution on the fact that by helping a few women into rehabilitation, we can use the media to appeal to a large number of people in this profession, and also gather help and hope from the citizens.

Our plan is to first encourage increased efforts from organizations that already save women from brothels. We then plan to take these women and rehabilitate them to independence. Furthermore, after successfully helping some women to self-reliance, we will use the media to spread the story of our success, thus giving other women courage to leave their profession and a hope for a better future. We have diagrammed our initial step in this centralized flowchart.

User-added image

After this initial step is under way and successful (hopefully!), our next step consists of taking help from the media to promote our cause.

User-added image
Our hope is that the psychosocial rehabilitation we provide will be enough for these women to recover from the circle of violence, disease and abuse that they were subjected to before.

Distracted Drriving: A Prevention Program
Submitted By  group_17,  Yesterday  |    Mon Feb 08 03:23:54 GMT 2010
Team Name : Group 17, ENDS 101-207, Spring 2010

Country : United States

Driving is very dangerous and some drivers do not have a program to teach them all the dangers associated with driving. It is crucial for teenagers to know and understand all the risks they face whenever they get behind the wheel. With technology today, there are so many distractions drivers face, such as texting, talking on the phone, changing songs on their iPod, or plugging in a location into their GPS.  All of these distractions increase your chance of getting into wreck. Our idea is to develop a program that raises awareness to the danger of driving distractions. The program would travel to high schools and have students participate in a driving simulator so that they can experience first-hand how dangerous driving is. The parents would be allowed to participate as well learning more about various methods they can teach to their children. Another idea to possibly go along with program would be to have a “docking station” where your vehicle wouldn’t start unless your phone is locked into it. This would prevent drivers from the temptation of doing anything with your phone while driving. Parents would be able to purchase this item and install it into any vehicle. This would depend on the feedback received from the program.

This idea is how we can feed the 30 million Americans who do no know where their next meal will come from. I believe the government can set up a Task Force whereby People can donate money all over America and let the government invest some capital into this as well out the $billions set aside  for green energy. Let  this money be used to set up more Agricultural plantations all over the country, let the government employ only those who are jobless and train them to be farmers (becoming a farmer would not take long). Let the govenment put experts in this areas to help coordinate things properly and to minimize waste. This is a capital project that will not only reduce poverty,it will reduce unemployment and can boost forex earnings.  aolorunn@willamette.edu30.0

Computer Learning on Wheels

  Computer learning on wheels

India is a land of intellectuals and at the same time people struggling to gain access to education. A big chunk of those who have access do not get quality education. Schools in rural and remote places lack basic infrastructure. Though brilliant talent rests in these places they do not get a chance to come to the forefront.

What triggered the idea: Schools in rural areas because of poor infrastructure are unable to provide computer education to students. Increasing number of students from rural areas are taking up white collared jobs which requires minimum knowledge of computers. As they are getting access to computers very late in life they develop fear towards it and thus face problems at workplace affecting their performance.

Even if computers are provided to these schools the schools cannot use it either because electricity has not reached these villages or electricity is not sufficient to power computers. Even the teachers themselves are not trained enough to teach the students.

Need Identified: To provide computer education to people in villages or remote places.

Target Segment: School students in villages and remote places in India

School teachers teaching in such schools

School dropouts, men and women working or otherwise

Member of panchayat, self help groups, cooperative societies etc

Farmers (to enable them to use e-chaupal and related services)

How it will be rolled out:

Computers will be installed in a bus powered by generators/ mobile power sources, projector and printer along with an instructor. Initial survey will be conducted to find the target schools, their infrastructure, class strength and competency level. Complete course plan will be designed for each target school and after discussion convenient slots will be allotted to specific classes of each school. Similarly other interested participants will be enrolled in the program. Each bus will be assigned set of schools depending upon the geographical location and strength of school.

It will be a year round activity and course will progress like any other regular courses with a mix of theory classes (with the help of projector) and practical classes (around 10 computers installed inside the bus). Focus will be more initially on computer usage, word, Excel, PowerPoint, internet, simple designing etc. Performance of participants will be monitored regularly and certificates will be provided to those who clear the computer literacy exam to help them get better job opportunities.

Key differentiating factors:

Year round program, systematically covers the target student segment, custom designed curriculum, teaching in local language (along with English), use of customized software and talent will be mapped to job opportunities to facilitate earning of livelihood.

Juvenile delinquency is one of our major drawbacks to our countries future. This serious but understandable fact of life that crawls and roams under  levels of social economic standards where poverty, unemployment, drug trafficking, illiteracy, sexual harassment and family disintegration are a conglomerate of many things experienced; surrounding many of our  future generation  who live in marginal communities where human rights have been partially or completely ignored by our government thus truncating their expectations to their very own right to life, health, education and housing. Simple necessities can make a difference when living under such conditions levels of poverty.

There has been though many non profit orgs that through the years have become the backbones in overriding, or at least lowering the criminality index through the implementation of outreach centers backed by big organizations such as USAID where municipalities and Christian organizations play a role as well.

http://www.jovenesxamor.org is a recently created non-profit org initiated by a group of teens and young adults, supervised by their church with the affinity to bring hope and joy to children in orphanages, rehab centers and homeless teens through live concerts, sports game events and the collection of donations from the private sector in Guatemala. The group has grown to 50+ volunteers in a 2-month period looking to becoming constant participants but in order to do so we need all the help provided through ideas, volunteerism and donations and travel expenses to reach out to children and teens in cities & towns. lexis30.0

Education in Latin America is characterized by been imparted over a traditional and disciplinary approach which highlights only the conceptual and cognitive judgments within the school learning process, giving as a result a society of young people who are unable to face the current social and labor demands who experience difficulty establishing links between school and the real life.

Be competent allows you to realize every activity with a considerable level of proficiency corresponding to established criteria. The level of mastery that a person can achieve in a task depends on the resources that he has, involving knowledge, beliefs, skills in various fields, attitudes and values.

Our project, "Leadership CALTIA" aims to equip youth with the tools and knowledge necessary to perform the activities required in our society, exploiting their skills and compensating for them weaknesses, through a collaborative leadership and teamwork, allowing them to be  proactive in their social activities, school and work, forged them as generators of positive changes in they environment.

This project consists in 3 stages:

The first stage is a camp, in which the participant will be challenged to extreme physical and mental activities, that will allow him to identify his weaknesses, leadership, skills, attitudes and a personal knowledge that will incite him to go beyond himself and propose viable opcions to actual social problems in his community.

The second stage would focus on an specific training, in which he can fully exploit his habilities, by putting into practice skills that will permit the development of effective communication, teamwork, conflict resolution and active and responsible participation in their environment.

In the third stage, we would made charge that each participant develops its own project, viable and proactive response to diferentes items such as  business organizations, non-profit associations, ecological, artistic, technological and university projects in where they can apply in real the new new learnings with they count.

Therefore, this project will be generator and incubator of many new projects leds by young people, that would cover areas of specific needs for the populations in wheres they live.

Providing mentorship to

I want to create a networking website which would provide a platform for students of one country to connect to the professors anywhere in the world. Students (mentee) can request a professor or highly qualified person to become their mentor, and assist them in their project work or creating a business. I want to create one to one online mentorship program.

For example, engineering students in India can seek online help from any professor or any technical person (mentor) in USA for their project.

I think one to one guidance would help people who have great ideas but they lack proper guidance. itsmanojsoni20.0

53% of American public schools are without libraries. Library Build, Inc seeks to change this.
Submitted By  chammond,  2 days ago  |    Sun Feb 07 05:22:42 GMT 2010

Country : United States

More than 34% of America's children can not read or write at grade level, as defined by federal guidelines. Meanwhile 53% of America's public schools can not offer their students access to a basic requirement of education: a functional library.

Library Build, Inc responds to this current crisis by providing libraries to America's public schools through two innovative programs. The first program is "Working Libraries" which will provide the books, computers, media resources, and furniture necessary for a functional school library.

The second program is "Library Fellows" which will recruit motivated college graduates to serve as librarians in America's most underserved public schools. The Library Fellows will work with teachers to provide holistic learning experiences for students by leading research classes, conducting study groups, and forming book clubs. Librarians are important to the learning process, and have a significant impact on students when they are involved, active, and consistent in their partnership with teachers throughout the learning process.

Through the success of these programs, Library Build, Inc will help America's students develop the literacy skills, and love of reading, necessary to succeed in elementary, middle, high school, and in college. chammond240.0

Country : United States

Servants for Him is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the conditions of the poor in Guatemala. American dentists team with Guatemalan dentists to go into remote areas, taking dental kits, (Aspetico), that allow them to perform tooth extractions, root canals, cleanings, surgery, and fillings. However, they are totally dependent on donations to continue their work. Additionally, there is very little statistical information available about these villages, which do not appear on maps and in which the primary language is Qu'eqchi.

I had the opportunity to gather an initial amount of data on 182 villagers, to include name, age, height, language spoken at home, employment, and number of times having been seen by a doctor or dentist. I was not, at that time, able to track who received what kind of treatment. I would like to further this study gather a richer data set and to begin to track the people treated by Servants for Him. I desire to publish an article about this population of Guatemalan people to advance health awareness not only in the community, but also to the global community as well. By using advanced statistical methods, I would be able to determine what variables of the environment have the strongest correlation to dental health. I would also provide an example for humanitarian groups to access when raising their own support and designing their own projects to impact their communities. smallm@uni.edu40.0

An Innovative Fair trade model for Sustainable Development
Submitted By  rudradeb,  3 days ago  |    Fri Feb 05 22:08:05 GMT 2010
Team Name : Sustainable Team
University : University of Cambridge
Country : United Kingdom

An Innovative fair trade model is being proposed which not only removes most of the obstacles of traditional fair trade model but also cuts down on the cost of the final product being delivered to customers in developed countries. The proposed model makes it easier for the remote producers to get involved with the fair trade movement and also removes the middle men. The model combines a very successful innovative fair trade business model with bulk SMS technology. Mobile phone ownership has grown hugely in both developed and developing countries. Farmers in Africa use SMS to receive market prices or doctors in Philippines use it to monitor their patients remotely. The cost of mobile phones has also reduced sharply making it accessible to lower middle class people. A survey in slums in Nairobi found out that there are around 600 mobile phones compared to 2 toilets. The proposed model is economical, social and environmental sustainable and truly serves the idea of “serving people profitably”. It not only benefits the producers in developing countries but also the retailers in developed countries and the customers. A case study has also been given with the financial projection to support my claims. I have shown that with this model price of some goods can be halfed.

Angleofvision.com - A free solution to City Problems.
Submitted By  user_deltech,  3 days ago  |    Fri Feb 05 17:53:36 GMT 2010
Team Name : Angels of Vision
University : Delhi Technological University
Country : India

Every year thousands of Indians lose their life due to unmanned railway crossings, open potholes and other such infrastructural damages. These are also a reason for major traffic snarls in the big cities like New Delhi and Mumbai. These traffic jams cause environmental pollution and energy wastage.

We feel, Government – Citizen Partnership is the best way to solve such issues.

Our website, http://www.angleofvision.com, provides a platform to facilitate this partnership. It is free and simple to employ and can be used by any registered user.

Our Website works as follows:-

 1.     We get real time updates from traffic policemen/volunteers situated all over the city through SMSes which are sent in a particular format. Information in a particular SMS updates our map, automatically. e.g. (Vinay Marg, Delhi – Tolstoy Marg, Delhi – Jam) will redden the road between these places – symbolizing the Jam. Similarly there are different colors for moderate and free traffic.

It is different from other real time traffic websites as they depend on cameras installed in certain locations or have their own volunteers to provide the information. This limits the extent of information and has a high cost of maintenance. We use the traffic policemen as our source of information, who are present everywhere.

2.     A registered user can mark a location on the map which he/she feels requires some attention, e.g., if you think a fallen tree or an open pothole is causing a nuisance on the road then simply click on the area and write about it.

Students and staff are increasingly reliant on technology, including computers, laptops and mobile phones, but most do not realize the ecological impacts of their everyday use. Computers and laptops are among the highest energy consumers in office and school environments. Studies have shown that through effective power management, energy consumption can be significantly reduced.

The goal of the TRSM Butterfly Effect Team is to change the energy wasteful habits of students and staff through a multimedia campaign and a series of ‘Power Down’ Parties aimed at raising awareness and knowledge in a fun and interactive environment.

Tax deductible Internships

America is facing a crisis to attract solid employees in any one given industry. A lot of careers require previous experience but internships have been increasingly difficult to find because of the economy.   Futhermore, students from lower income families cannot afford to work for low paying internships and are forced to take other summer jobs so they can support themselves.  Thus when they graduate college they have less experience in the workplace compared to fellow graduates and consequently appear less qualified.  Education is the key to success in today's society but experience allows students to use that education to build a career.  Internships provide a good medium for gaining this experience but often go overlooked as it may be too much overhead for a company to take on. Team 16's solution to this problem is to make internships tax deductible so companies will be encouraged to train the next generation of workers.
