Each year, thousands of university students take the first step to changing the world by entering their ideas in Dell Social Innovation Competition. The competition judges select student social entrepreneurs who demonstrate clear vision and initiative to turn their ideas into actionable plans to change the lives of people in need. Dell and The University of Texas congratulate the winners and encourage all students to continue dreaming to action.

Gardens for Health is dedicated to enabling people living with HIV/AIDS to improve their nutrition, health and treatment adherence through sustainable agriculture. Gardens for Health was founded on the belief that a comprehensive HIV/AIDS prevention, care and treatment plan requires access to adequate, nutritious food. The Gardens for Health team is currently working in Rwanda in partnership with cooperatives of people living with HIV/AIDS.

Tomberg Prize in Environmental Sustainability: $10,000

SolarCycle

SolarCycle designed a revolutionary material made of used plastic bags and the aluminized interior of chip bags, which replaces mirrors in solar concentrating applications. SolarCycle upcycles trash to produce durable, sustainable and financially accessible solar cookers and water pasteurizers.


People’s Choice Award: $1,000

Embrace: A $25 Infant Incubator for Developing Countries
Stanford University
Team Members:Jane Chen, Linus Liang, Nate Meng

Embrace is a thermoregulator designed to save premature and low birth weight babies. Embrace’s mission is to help the 20 million vulnerable babies born every year around the world, who can not access traditional incubators that cost up to $20,000.

INeedAPencil.com provides low-income high school students with free, high-quality online SAT exam preparation. Low-income students score 218 points below high-income counterparts, perpetuating restricted access to college. INeedAPencil.com hopes to expand this free resource to more than half a million low-income students in the U.S. who test each year.
